About our Founders

Hello! We’re Nicholas and Elizabeth Moats, founders of Yirah School House. Our passion for innovative learning (truly a more traditional style of learning) really began a decade ago when we were going through school ourselves and wondered why we weren’t experiencing more project-based learning. These thoughts continued in the back of our minds through our college years, where we both completed education degrees (Nicholas in chemistry and Elizabeth in english) and stuck with us after finishing our bachelors degrees. Elizabeth went on to complete masters in Library and Information Science to better place her in an environment where she could help curious people find any information that brought them joy or learning.

Our curiosity about microschools exploded when we had our son and knew that we wanted a more individualized, self-paced, and hands-on education for him. We dove deeply into podcasts and books, our favorites being A Thomas Jefferson Education by Oliver DeMille and Courage to Grow by Laura Sandefer. This past year, after months of research, interviews, reading, and preparing, we are bringing our passion for microschools into being with Yirah School House. We truly believe that kids are incredibly capable, and we are here to inspire and empower them by providing personalized and project-based learning that allow them to lean into their curiosity and creativity, taking charge of their own education.

Hello! I’m Nicholas, co-founder and head learning guide at Yirah School House. My love of learning has helped me in my training of becoming a jack-of-all-trades. In my free time you can find me helping my dad on our family farm, tearing into yet another home renovation project, building something ridiculous in our garage, or relaxing and enjoying conversations with my family and friends.

Hi! I’m Lizzy, co-founder of Yirah School House. I run a lot of the behind the scenes things that go into Yirah and help with just about everything else. I currently spend my days hanging out and learning with my little boy, Lincoln. I love reading, natural health, and just about any “grandma hobby” you can think of.
